About this book
Roger Williams's A Key Into the Language of America was first published in 1643. A transcriber's note says the text follows a reprinted edition of 1827 and keeps the original spellings of the Native American words, with the dictionary tables set out in two columns.
The entries pair a word or phrase with its English meaning, followed by Williams's own comments. Under Chap. VI, Of the Family and Businesse of the House, Wetu is a house and Nickquénum is “I am going”, and other words name a round house, a long house with two fires, the mats and long poles that make up a house, and fire and smoke. A note says women live apart in a little house for four, five or six days. Elsewhere Williams adds short verses and Christian reflections. The phrases sampled also include questions about how many were in a company, counts from two up to a hundred, and whether one came by boat or by land.
