About this book
Thomas Garnett brings the language of natural philosophy into a public lecture about the causes of health and illness. In the second edition, printed in 1800, he explains bodily life through heat, food, air and a property he calls excitability. Examples drawn from snakes, plants and ordinary chemical reactions make his reasoning accessible to a general audience. His preface also describes lectures delivered in English towns to support charitable institutions.
The discussion turns from theories of life to the conditions of everyday living, particularly the smoke and crowded atmosphere of large towns. Garnett argues for fresh country air, regular outdoor activity and healthier surroundings for children. Read as an early medical publication, the pamphlet shows how a lecturer linked scientific explanation with advice about personal habits and urban environments. It offers a compact view of health education and the medical assumptions presented to public audiences at the turn of the nineteenth century.
