About this book
On the Mode of Communication of Cholera is John Snow's second edition, described on its title page as much enlarged and dated London, 1855. The preface says the first edition appeared in August 1849 as a slender pamphlet, and that this one contains the substance of his later papers read at medical societies and published in medical journals, together with new matter from his own inquiries.
In one passage a letter to Dr. Simpson from T. Laycock lists dated cases among families in York and Pocklington. Another passage quotes figures per 10,000 inhabitants for districts of Paris in 1832, from 80 in Montmartre and the Chaussée d'Antin to 530 and 520 in the quartiers of the Hôtel de Ville and the Cité. The text then turns to Newcastle-upon-Tyne, where in 1831 and 1832 there were no waterworks.
