About this book
The book is a life of Napoleon Bonaparte, with a sketch of Josephine, Empress of the French. Any inhabitant of the Island of Martinique, in the French West Indies, will say that the proudest monument there is the statue of a woman.
To repair her fortune and secure to her children the estate of Beauharnais, the Viscountess de Beauharnais enlisted her friends, especially Mme. Tallien, and was soon one of the women oftenest seen at the functions given by the members of the Directory. Barras is described as a member of the Directory, its most influential member in fact, a prince of corruption, but a man of elegance, and ability. Bonaparte sped down the Brenta behind Wurmser, overtook him at Bassano on the 8th of September, and defeated him, and the Austrians fled in terrible demoralization. The text says that France to-day is largely what Napoleon made her, and that the most liberal institutions of continental Europe bear his impress.
