About this book
The preface says the author has made the effort to portray Napoleon as he appears to an average man. The preface also says that no attempt has been made to give a full and detailed account of Napoleon’s life or work. The author says that archives have not been rummaged and that new sources of information have not been discovered.
A poor woman holds out a dead child toward Napoleon, who is deeply moved, gives her kind words and money, and gets her pensioned. Chapter XXXIV says that after the French defeat at Aspern, and while they were shut up in the island of Lobau, it had seemed that Napoleon’s position was almost desperate. The same chapter says the Tyrolese were in revolt and had expelled the French and Bavarians.
