About this book
Sidney Lee's A Life of William Shakespeare is in its fourth edition, dated 1899, with portraits and facsimiles. The preface says it is based on the article on Shakespeare he contributed to the fifty-first volume of the "Dictionary of National Biography," changed and enlarged enough to count as an independent work.
The text gives dated records of the poet's family. John Shakespeare is chief alderman on September 5, 1571, and in 1578 he and his wife mortgage his wife's property Asbies at Wilmcote for 40 pounds to Edmund Lambert. Another passage traces Shakespeare's reputation in France, noting that Cyrano de Bergerac borrowed from Cymbeline, Hamlet and The Merchant of Venice, and that Voltaire studied him on a visit to England between 1726 and 1729. A passage on music names Schumann and Franz Schubert among composers who set his words.
