About this book
Johann Sebastian Bach: His Life, Art and Work is Johann Nikolaus Forkel's study of Bach, translated from the German, with notes and appendices by Charles Sanford Terry, New York, 1920. The contents list chapters on the family of Bach, his career, Bach at Leipzig, Bach as a clavier player, organist, composer and teacher, and his personal characteristics, with appendices that include a chronological catalogue of his compositions.
In his preface Forkel says he long meant to give an account of Bach's life with reflections on his genius and works. The introduction mentions the Bachgesellschaft and a bibliography of Bach literature. The appendix on the church cantatas gives each work's number, a date such as c. 1725, the feast day, the source of the text and the voices. A note on the Clavier Suites traces the prelude of the first Suite to a Gigue by Charles Dieupart.
