About this book
The account of coinage says that conquered Greek cities were not allowed to strike gold, while their issue of silver and copper was not interfered with. Certain Persian satraps were permitted to issue silver coins bearing their own names. The Phoenician cities of the Mediterranean coast are said to have begun striking coins comparatively late, at the end of the fifth and beginning of the fourth centuries B.C.
The tetradrachms of Tyre carry a dolphin or Melkart riding a sea-horse, and an owl with crook and flail described as Egyptian symbols of royalty. The double shekels of Sidon bear a galley with sails or rowers, often before a walled city, and the king of Persia in a chariot. The coins of Athens circulated widely, particularly in Central Asia, where imitations were made when the Athenian mint could no longer supply the demand.
