About this book

Spices, sea routes and changing maps give Joseph Jacobs a way to explain how geographical knowledge spread. Published in 1898, this history connects major voyages with trade, especially the European search for the Spice Islands. Its chapters move through ancient geography, medieval travellers, ocean navigation and polar exploration. Maps show how ideas about the shape and position of lands developed, while a chronological appendix gathers voyages and the works that recorded them.

Jacobs begins by recognising that people already knew the places Europeans later claimed to discover. He gives examples of local mapmakers, including Tupaia, whose chart showed Pacific islands across a wide stretch of ocean. The account of Columbus then follows compass observations, uncertain distances and signs of approaching land.

Joseph Jacobs (1854-1916) was an Australian-born folklorist, literary critic, and historian who spent much of his career in England. He edited English Fairy Tales, Celtic Fairy Tales, and other collections, becoming one of the most influential compilers of folk stories in the English language.
