About this book
Eight-year-old Geoffry, known as Jeff, has grown up in India with a loving mother and Maggie, the woman who cares for him. Another hot summer threatens his health, and his parents cannot afford a stay in the hills. He must travel with Maggie to live with his grandmother overseas. The news turns an ordinary morning of new clothes and household preparations into a painful lesson in separation.
An accusation about a forbidden boat outing later brings Jeff into conflict with Uncle Hugh. Brian has the knife he borrowed from Jeff, and the evidence leads the uncle to blame the wrong boy. Restrictions on riding, fishing and outdoor play make the punishment especially hard, while Jessie brings him news of the garden and stable. This children's novel explores courage through family affection, anger and unfair treatment. Its close attention to Jeff's distress gives readers a child's view of what adults expect bravery to mean.
