About this book

Fourteen-year-old Geoff Tudor enjoys the attention of his sisters, even while his widowed mother faces troubling news about the family's money. Elsa, Frances and little Vicky try to protect her from worry, but Geoff's demands for food and messages test their patience. Mrs. Molesworth builds this children's novel around the difference between doing well at school and being considerate at home, with Great-Uncle Hoot-Toot's advice offering his mother a source of confidence.

The story also follows Geoff beyond the household. A November train ride takes him from London toward Shalecray with Ned Jowett, a countryman whose behaviour raises doubts that the boy scarcely notices. Cold carriages, muddy lanes and dwindling pocket money give a practical edge to his wish for independence. Readers interested in family stories will find sibling loyalties, everyday selfishness and a young person's uncertain grasp of adult affairs.
