About this book
Harry Houdini brings the trained eye of a stage performer to claims of communication with the dead. Published in 1924, this illustrated study considers mediums, spirit photography, slate writing and the methods used to produce apparently mysterious effects. Its introduction also makes the inquiry personal: Houdini reflects on his early performances as a medium and explains how grief changed his understanding of the hopes people bring to a seance.
The book combines accounts of prominent figures in Spiritualism with discussions of investigation and deception. Letters exchanged with Arthur Conan Doyle reveal two friends interpreting the same experiences differently. Houdini weighs a message attributed to his mother against his knowledge of her language, while Doyle argues that the evidence supports belief. Readers interested in the history of Spiritualism will find a practical concern with how claims are tested, alongside the emotional pressures that shape belief.
