About this book
A Manual of Historic Ornament describes architectural decoration in which outlines of figures, birds and flowers are sunk into granite or basalt and carved within the recessed outline. The account of Egyptian friezes describes superposed bands depicting weaving, glass blowing, pottery making, ploughing, sowing, reaping, hunting and fishing. The discussion explains the profuse use of the Lotus in Egyptian decoration through its association with fertility and new life.
The account of stoneware distinguishes the material from earthenware by its larger proportion of silicia and the greater firing heat that vitrifies its body into a kind of glass. The description of glazing says common salt is usually thrown into the kiln during firing, where the volatilized salt reacts with silicia in the body.
