About this book

A Millionaire of Rough-and-Ready is by Bret Harte. The Prologue says there was no mistake this time and that he had struck gold at last, and describes a misshapen piece of brown-stained quartz, interspersed with dull yellow metal. Masters says drily, I suppose you want to mail that letter, and Slinn looks down to see, to his utter surprise, that he is holding an unfinished pencilled note in his hand. Masters walks away, and Slinn watches him cross over to his abandoned claim; the text says Slinn is alone now with his secret and his treasure.

Esther says: if you MUST leave now, it ain't much out of your way to go down through the garden and take a look at pa as you go. Slinn rises and limps to the side of his employer and says: We promised each other never to allude to our talk of Christmas Eve again unless we had other proofs of what I told you then.
