About this book
A New Century of Inventions, by James White, civil engineer, is described as designs and descriptions of one hundred machines relating to arts, manufactures, and domestic life. The book describes using a Dynamometer in the measurement of forces, with the example of measuring the power expended by a Horse in drawing a Carriage. The writer describes a churn in which each fly produces a kind of vortex round its own centre, giving an unceasing agitation of the liquid and, the writer believes, the best of churning. The writer adds that the opinion is stated as a mechanician, not having been initiated into the secrets of the dairy properly so called.
A numbered list in the book names, among others, a Mangle, perpetual or rotatory, a Micrometer, to measure minute spaces, and a Pencyclograph; or instrument for drawing portions of large circles.
