About this book
Joseph Wickham Roe, Professor of Industrial Engineering at New York University and named with the Museum of the Peaceful Arts, City of New York, wrote this book on the men who built machine tools in England and in America. It was first printed in 1916 and reprinted in 1926.
One passage names workers who passed through Maudslay's shop, among them Clement, Roberts, Whitworth and Nasmyth, and quotes J. G. Moon, an apprentice there, on lathes that carried their slide-rest on a triangular iron bar. Another passage turns to the Robbins & Lawrence armory at Windsor, Vermont, and its use of the interchangeable system for guns. A third describes Wilkinson's boring machine, used to bore cylinders, in a passage that mentions Watt's engines.
