The second volume of A New Voyage Round the World completes the account by Otto von Kotzebue (1787-1846) of his 1823-1826 circumnavigation in the Russian ship Predpriyatie. The narrative takes in Hawaii, the Marshall Islands he had charted on his earlier Rurik voyage, Kamchatka, and the long run home by the Philippines and the Cape of Good Hope. Naturalists aboard, including the physicist Emil Lenz, gave the expedition lasting scientific value, and Kotzebue’s observations of island societies remain a source for Pacific historians.
