About this book
The preface presents the book as a textbook meant to provide secure foundations for a college course in modern European history through sufficiently detailed information. The account describes more than three hundred states collectively called the Germanies, united only by what the text calls a slender imperial thread. The description gives the form of a central government with an emperor to execute laws and a Diet to make them, with the emperor chosen rather than necessarily succeeding by inheritance.
The account says Parliament offered the crown to William and Mary while safeguarding its own power and the Protestant religion through a Declaration of Rights. The account associates the spread of the French emperor’s rule with the abolition of feudalism and serfdom and recognition of equality before the law.
