About this book
The origin and nature of the earliest universities form the subject of three lectures on institutions, instruction and student life. The account describes the university of the twentieth century as the lineal descendant of mediaeval Paris and Bologna, with unbroken historic continuity. The beginnings of the oldest universities are described as obscure and often uncertain despite historical research. The account rejects the claim that King Alfred founded the University of Oxford and says that some institutions arose slowly without a fixed beginning.
The university is described as a society of masters when it was not a society of students. The discussion of administration notes the absence of important endowments and boards of trustees, alongside much time spent in university meetings.
