About this book
A Popular Account of Dr. Livingstone's Expedition to the Zambesi and Its Tributaries is by David Livingstone. The full title adds the discovery of Lakes Shirwa and Nyassa, 1858-1864. A dedication to Lord Palmerston is offered as a tribute to the great Statesman who has ever had at heart the amelioration of the African race.
The text says Mariano had been in the habit of sending out armed parties on slave-hunting forays among the helpless tribes, and that all the Portuguese spoke of him as a rare monster of inhumanity. On the last occasion of holding Divine service at Sesheké, the men were invited to converse, and they replied that they could not believe that all the dead would rise again, asking whether those eaten by more than one crocodile can all be raised again to life. A woman rebukes her husband for selling a goat without consulting his wife, calling it an insult to a woman.
