About this book

A storm shakes the Coomber family's home, a converted boat chained to a mud-bank near the sea. When distress signals sound from a ship on the sands, the fisherman and his son Bob head for Fellness to gather help. Repeated attempts to launch a rescue boat fail before the men reach the wreckage and discover a child secured to a floating spar. Emma Leslie places this children's story among fishing families whose homes and livelihoods depend on uncertain weather.

Tiny's efforts to read give the story a quieter focus as she tries to understand her faith. She helps with fish and nets while puzzling over letters, and her conversations with Dick bring out questions of kindness, obedience and her father's drinking. Readers interested in Christian fiction for children will find religious teaching woven into everyday work, family tensions and the small girl's determination to learn.
