About this book

A fierce November storm drives a brig onto the sands near the breakwater, and Harry Boyns, a boy of about fourteen, brings the news to his father. Captain Dan Boyns joins Bob Gaston and the crew of Covelly's newly arrived lifeboat, which the townspeople have yet to try. Under old Jacobs's command, they row toward the stranded vessel while anxious spectators gather on shore. The boat's stability and ability to empty itself matter as much as the courage of the people aboard.

Alongside the rescue work, Ballantyne gives space to quieter forms of care. Annie Webster tends her convalescent father with conversation, music and reading, setting her patient attention against his fixation on money. Harry, now a captain with business in Liverpool, calls regularly to ask after John Webster's health, and his pleasure in seeing Annie adds a personal thread. Readers drawn to sea rescue and family relationships will find both here.
