About this book

A Scarlet Poppy, and Other Stories is a book of stories by Harriet Elizabeth Prescott Spofford, with a New York imprint of 1894. It begins with one titled Mrs. Claxton's Skeleton, whose narrator says Mrs. Claxton always carried it about with her, though it was not her bones, and that it was connected with her domestic difficulties.

In one passage Mrs. Claxton thinks well of her husband, the owner of the vast Claxtonberg mills, and wishes only that he would consider her more on an equality with himself, though at first she questioned whether this was unreasonable, she who had been nothing but a poor little governess. Another passage has a woman telling Mr. Chipperley that his suit is accepted, but that there must be no mention of gifts or settlements, because her daughter, Miss Honor, is exceedingly sensitive. In a third, Mrs. Fernalde says, I have had my threescore and ten.
