About this book

Armenian village customs and fantastic adventures share the pages of this 1898 collection. A. G. Seklemian gathers folk tales and fairy stories, while Alice Stone Blackwell's introduction describes the traditions surrounding them. Bonfires, water festivals and a flower-decked jar used to tell fortunes give the opening pages a concrete sense of community life. The introduction also identifies Erzroom as a place where Seklemian collected stories from spoken accounts.

In the tales, a magic ring calls helpers into view, and three turtledoves become maidens beside a garden pool. One poor lad spends his small earnings to save a kitten and a mouse from cruel village boys. These details offer readers a way to explore both the everyday values and the imagined worlds of Armenian storytelling, with acts of kindness set alongside wonders and encounters with giants.
