About this book
A School History of the United States is by John Bach McMaster, dated 1897. The preface says the colonial period is treated as the childhood of the United States and confined to events needed to understand what has happened since 1776, including the discoveries, explorations and settlements by the English, French, Spaniards and Dutch.
The text uses numbered, titled sections. One describes the Roanoke Colony of 1585, where 108 emigrants under Ralph Lane began a town and Sir Francis Drake, touching at the island, took them home to England. It tells of John White's colony of 1587 and the birth of Virginia, the child of Eleanor Dare, on August 18, 1587. Another passage describes a settler's half-faced camp and log cabin. The Declaration of Independence of 1776 is printed in an appendix.
