About this book
The discussion of history textbooks includes laws forbidding books with partisan or political bias and laws prescribing content whose source is a sectional or partisan animus. Vermont passed an act in 1862 directing the Board of Education to select a textbook of the state's geography and history for use in all district schools for five years. The report of the Superintendent of Public Education in Rhode Island named histories by Berard and Goodrich as commonly used in public schools in 1865.
North Carolina designated Moore’s History of North Carolina for use in public schools by legislative enactment in 1879. Indiana directed its state board of education in 1889 to choose a history equal to Thalheimer’s History of the United States.
