About this book
Jeremy Collier's A Short View of the Immorality, and Profaneness of the English Stage is an argument about the English stage, joined on the title page with the sense of antiquity upon the same argument. The transcriber's note says its spelling is left in the natural variability of seventeenth-century orthography.
In the pages sampled Collier argues that coarse stage language tends to stain the imagination and weaken the defences of virtue, and he recalls that Plato banished poets from his commonwealth. Another passage turns to the ancient stage and cites characters in Plautus and Terence, including Philolaches, Lusiteles, Chremes and Pamphilus, in speeches on virtue, duty and modesty. A further passage says music requires looking after no less than the press or the mint, and suggests that a public regulation might not be amiss.
