About this book

The note says the articles are collected in one volume in the hope that they may be of use to those who are interested in the question of stage reform. The contents list a first part headed THE STAGE OF SHAKESPEARE, with The Elizabethan Playhouse and The Plays and the Players. The text quotes an Englishman visiting Venice about 1605 who wrote that the house was very beggarly and base in comparison with our stately playhouses in England.

The writer goes through scenes in turn, saying that Scene 8 is one of narration only and that Scene 9 disposes of the second of Portia's remaining suitors. The text says that we are shown the Prince of Morocco making his choice of the caskets. The text says that before a new play can be produced at the National Theatre it ought to be submitted to the opinion of the three parties interested in its production.
