About this book
A Student in Arms: Second Series is by Donald Hankey. The contents list, among others, chapters called The Bad Side of Military Service, Letter to an Army Chaplain and The Fear of Death in War. The text speaks of Donald's childish imagination and says his mother was his never-failing confidante and friend, his love and admiration for her unbounded.
A personal belief stated in the text is that very few men indeed fear death, while the vast majority experience a more or less violent physical shrinking from the pain of death and wounds. The text describes a sketch signed 'D.W.A.H., by Himself' as a profile in which the eye has almost disappeared under the brow and the mouth is tightly closed.
