About this book
Soldiers speak in their own accents in Robert W. Service's 1916 collection of poems about the First World War. The opening foreword places the making of verse among ruined roads, night watches and the care of wounded men. Its speaker finds relief in song while asking whether war can ever be right. The poems that follow give that question individual voices: a schoolboy eager to enlist, a working man anxious about his family, and a convalescent remembering his brother.
Rhythm, rhyme and conversational speech turn the wartime scenes into compact stories. In the middle excerpt, a soldier's encounter with an opponent turns on a misunderstanding, while a gambler recalls his friendship with the devout Soulful Sam. These shifts between sorrow, argument and humor give readers a way to explore how ordinary people imagine duty and endure fear. Family ties and comradeship matter as much as public calls to serve.
