About this book
A Study of Pueblo Pottery as Illustrative of Zuñi Culture Growth is by Frank Hamilton Cushing. The contents list, among others, headings called Habitations affected by environment, Pottery affected by environment, Evolution of forms and Evolution of decoration. The list of illustrations, among others, figures called Zuñi prayer-meal bowl illustrating symbolism in form and decoration and Native paintings of sacred butterfly.
The text says the smooth outer surface was found preferable to the corrugated surface, not only because it took paint more readily, but also because the bowl, when painted outside as well as inside, formed a far handsomer utensil for household use. The larger vessels continued to be corrugated and indented, the text says, while the smoothed and painted bowl came into general use. The text speaks of forthcoming monographs on the exhaustless ceramic collections of the United States National Museum by Mr. William H. Holmes.
