About this book
William Henry Holmes is the author of Art in Shell of the Ancient Americans. Clams formed a very important part of the food of the ancient seaboard tribes, the text says, and the emptied shells have been utilized in a great variety of ways. The text says the valves of many species are large and deep and are available for cups and dishes, and that they were also used as knives, scrapers, and hoes.
A small belt is somewhat fragmentary, with an unknown number of beads lost from the ends, and is seven rows wide and at present two hundred beads long. The text describes a design of a series of five double diamonds worked in dark wampum upon white. The text refers to abundance of proof that the whites often engaged successfully in the manufacture of this shell money.
