About this book
The contents list definitions of cult and Siouan, the Siouan family, authorities, and an alleged belief in a Great Spirit. The study advises dividing phenomena into human and superhuman categories when considering the subject from an Indian's point of view. The discussion stresses the importance of establishing exact meanings for native words and phrases before proceeding.
The account of a dance says participants believe that slighting any part of the rites puts a person in great danger. The selected overseers or managers attend the candidates, who believe all their devotions please the sun. The candidates pray mentally while dancing, asking for pity and the fulfillment of their desires.
