About this book
W. G. Aston’s Shinto is subtitled The Ancient Religion of Japan. The text says that neither adultery nor fornication are mentioned in the Ohoharahi, and that theft is not mentioned in the Ohoharahi. The text says: in a word, the Japanese offence was ritual, the Jewish moral.
The Nihongi is quoted as telling that Izanagi and Izanami stood on the floating bridge of Heaven (the rainbow) and held counsel together, saying Is there not a country beneath? Two deities named Kami-musubi and Taka-musubi, meaning High-growth and Divine-growth, are described as of some importance in later times. The text says that in Shinto, as in other religions, bowing is a common form of respect to the gods, and that it is the custom to bow twice before and after making an offering. The text says clapping hands was in ancient Japan a general token of respect, now confined to religious worship.
