About this book

A bookseller's dedication turns literary flattery into a business calculation: a grand name on the cover can sell an edition, and writers eagerly nominate themselves for praise. In Jonathan Swift's prose satire, published in 1704, the familiar rituals of publishing become material for jokes about vanity, learning and reputation. Elaborate introductions and digressions form part of the comedy, with the narrator commenting on readers, critics and his own writing.

Alongside these arguments runs the tale of Lord Peter and his two brothers. The excerpt finds the brothers sharing a lodging after their break with Peter, while the narrator discusses how authors raise their characters from hardship to prosperity. A Tale of a Tub gives readers both a fictional quarrel and a running examination of literary habits. Its interest today lies in the sharp connection between public praise, private ambition and the way writers try to direct their audience's judgment.

Jonathan Swift

Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) was an Anglo-Irish satirist, essayist, and cleric, the foremost prose satirist in English. Gulliver's Travels and 'A Modest Proposal' remain devastatingly sharp.
