About this book
A boarding-school proprietor explains how to turn education into a profitable business, and his helpful rules expose the abuses behind the profits. This anonymous English satire adopts the voice of a successful academy keeper who claims to be sharing his experience for the public good. His advice covers fees, meals, servants, discipline and lessons, with particular attention to pleasing parents while keeping costs down.
The jokes grow sharper as the rules move from padded accounts and poor food to the treatment of pupils and teaching assistants. Wealth and family influence shape punishment, while difficult questions become occasions for the master to conceal his ignorance. Short numbered sections give the pamphlet the appearance of a practical handbook. For readers interested in the history of schooling, its comic instructions reveal the tensions between educational promises, social ambition and commercial self-interest.
