About this book
An early morning council in the summer-house gives the Danvers children serious business to discuss: the fate of their customary birthday battle. Since returning from his first term at school, Hal has treated his brothers and sisters with an air of superiority. His twin, Drusie, wants to continue preparing the fort and feast, even though their rules prevent her from asking him about the game before the day itself.
Geraldine Mockler builds this children's story around holiday play, family loyalties and the wish to impress an older friend. Hal's cricket companion, Dodds, expects him to bowl and field while keeping the batting for himself. Meanwhile, Drusie's grand speeches and Jim's trick with her water glass bring comedy to the children's solemn plans. The contrast between shared games and unequal friendship gives the story a clear interest for readers thinking about fairness, pride and belonging.
