About this book

A moving van on Summit Avenue gives Dolly Fayre something more interesting to watch than furniture: a girl her own age in the house next door. Dolly is almost fifteen, shy, and carefully trained in manners. Dotty Rose, swinging her feet from an open window, seems much bolder. Their first exchange of looks goes badly, while their mothers quietly assess one another's households through chairs and curtains. Carolyn Wells builds this children's novel around neighbours, family life, and the wish for a close friend.

The story also moves into summer adventures by the water. When little Gladys drifts away in a canoe, Dotty runs for help and Dolly struggles with heavy oars to reach her. That scene brings urgency to a book whose opening finds comedy in everyday social rules. Readers interested in friendship stories can follow the contrast between the two girls, from awkward first impressions to the demands of acting together in a crisis.
