About this book
A Thousand Miles in the Rob Roy Canoe on Rivers and Lakes of Europe is by J. MacGregor, M.A., barrister at law. The preface says the voyage was made last Autumn in a small Canoe, with a double paddle and sails, which the writer managed alone. The preface lists the waters navigated, among them the Rivers Thames, Sambre, Meuse, Rhine, Main, Danube, Reuss, Aar, Ill, Moselle, Meurthe, Marne, and Seine.
The writer says that a fly stung the hand while lolling about in the boat at anchor in the hot sun, and that it was the only occasion on which any insect troubled him on the voyage. The writer describes the Cornwall Reformatory School-ship moored at Purfleet, where about 100 boys sat in rows along the old frigate's main-deck. The text says a landscape ever so well known from the road becomes new again when you view it from the level of the water.
