About this book

An Inland Voyage recounts travel up the Scheldt and then the Rupel, with a favourable wind carrying the travellers toward the brickyards of Boom. The river scene contains passing barges laden with hay, reeds and willows along the stream, and cattle and grey horses looking over the embankment. The narrator describes Boom and its brickyards growing smokier and shabbier until a church with a clock and a wooden bridge mark the town's central quarters.

The narrator's reflections on the humiliation of arms and the loss of Alsace and Lorraine describe hearts still hot, less against Germany than against the Empire. The preface compares the writer appearing before the public with an architect who displays his plans and briefly takes pride in his work.
