About this book
A Treatise on Anatomy, Physiology, and Hygiene, by Calvin Cutter, M.D., is designed for colleges, academies, and families. The book carries one hundred and fifty engravings. The preface says that, as health requires the observance of the laws inherent to the different organs of the human system, not only boys, but girls, should acquire a knowledge of the laws of their organization.
The text states that sulphur exists in the bones, muscles, hair, and nails, that albumen is found in the body in both a fluid and solid form, and that fibrin exists abundantly in the blood, chyle, and lymph. An observation says that the white of an egg is composed of albumen, which can be coagulated or hardened by alcohol. The text says that a person whose chest is small, and whose apparel is worn tight over the ribs, suffers more from the cold than the broad-chested and loosely dressed. The text includes numbered questions such as What is said of oxygen? and What is said of phosphorus?
