About this book
The treatise explains the body's cavities as spaces for lodging and protecting delicate parts of the system. The anatomical account places the heart, lungs and great blood vessels in the chest, and the liver, stomach and other organs in the lower trunk. The section on joints defines a joint as the union of bones and describes movable joints as held together by strong fibrous bands called ligaments.
The explanation of sprains describes strain or tearing of the material connecting joints, and says that such an injury may be, and frequently is, as serious as a broken bone. The terminology entries define cranial nerves as nerves arising from the brain.
