About this book
A Treatise on the Origin, Progress, Prevention, and Cure of Dry Rot in Timber is by Thomas Allen Britton. The title page adds remarks on the means of preserving wood from destruction by sea worms, beetles, ants, etc. A sketch of dry rot fungus is labelled as being on a basement floor joist in a house at Greenwich, near London, in Feb 1875. A caption lists the colours of fungi as white, yellow, green, purple, and rusty red.
The text says the hardest and heaviest woods come from the hotter climates, with the pine as the only exception, which furnishes heavier timber when it has grown in colder regions, or upon high mountains. The text says trees grown on northern slopes furnish lighter timber than if grown on southern or western. The text says M. Paschal le Gros, of Paris, has patented his system for preserving all kinds of wood by means of a double salt of manganese and of zinc, used either alone or with an admixture of creosote.
