About this book
George Francis Atkinson's Studies of American Fungi deals with mushrooms, edible and poisonous, and with other fungi. The text sampled covers fungi in abandoned coal mines, where mushrooms and bracket fungi grow thickly on wooden props and doors because the air is damp and the temperature steady. One figure is a flashlight photograph taken by the writer in September 1896 of mycelium covering a door at Wilkesbarre, Pennsylvania, an area eight feet by ten.
Other pages describe single species plainly: the colour of the cap, the flesh, the tubes, the stem and the spores, with measurements in microns. One species with tubes under the cap is compared with Boletus edulis, and beginners are cautioned not to confuse the two. The book also contains a key for sorting fungi by their gills and other features, with page numbers pointing to each group.
