About this book

A midnight visitor with the queen's own face brings fear into the palace of Khauran. Taramis discovers that the stranger is Salome, the twin sister she believed had died at birth. Salome describes a childhood shaped by a magician's teaching and an old family curse, then claims an equal right to the throne. Their likeness gives a struggle over royal power the added danger of mistaken identity.

Robert E. Howard's fantasy tale belongs to the Conan stories, with sorcery, mercenary soldiers and palace intrigue sharing its imagined world. As the conflict develops, Taramis is held in a dungeon while Salome rules in her place, and a letter records the city's fear under Constantius. Threatening dialogue and sharply drawn contrasts between the sisters drive the tension.
