A Year in China, by Martha Noyes Williams, also gives a narrative of capture and imprisonment, when homeward bound, on board the rebel pirate Florida. The text says the harbor of Hong Kong is elliptical in form, and completely landlocked by mountains and bold rocks. The text says that on nearing the port of Hong Kong almost the first object that meets the eye are the Chinese graves.
On arrival at Hong Kong the writer's party found the Chinese population in the midst of their New Year festivities, during which all classes cease their occupations and for some days indulge in mirth and enjoyment. The writer says that before leaving the Jacob Bell the captain obtained permission of the prize-master to leave his steward and a waiting-man on board, who were to look after his effects. The text on a monument describes a woman as of excellent understanding, rich in accomplishments and virtues, the delight of her friends, a crown to her husband, and an ornament to the Missionary cause.
