About this book

Bayard Taylor wrote The Lands of the Saracen, or, Pictures of Palestine, Asia Minor, Sicily, and Spain. The book is dedicated to Washington Irving, and calls itself the chronicle of the writer's travels through lands once occupied by the Saracens.

The writer says that when you behold Damascus from the Salahiyeh, the last slope of the Anti-Lebanon, it is the realization of all that you have dreamed of Oriental splendor. The writer says the great Syrian plain stretches away to the Euphrates. The writer says they rode for an hour through the gardens before entering the gate. The writer says he has endeavored to ascertain the origin of this fast month, and that the Syrian Christians say it is a mere imitation of an incident which happened to Mahomet. A description of Jerusalem says the best views of the city are from the Mount of Olives, and the hill north of it.

About the author

Bayard Taylor

Bayard Taylor (1825-1878) was an American travel writer, poet, and diplomat whose dispatches for the New-York Tribune made him one of the most widely read correspondents of his day. His first book, Views A-foot (1846), described a walking tour of Europe made on almost no money, and he went on to report from California, Egypt, India, Japan, and the Arctic.
