About this book

A slow horse, an awkward dance and a general asking for more troops all become occasions for Lincoln's wit in this collection compiled by R. D. Wordsworth in 1908. Brief anecdotes place him among political rivals, army officers, lawyers and family members. In one scene, Stephen A. Douglas holds his hat at the first inaugural; in another, Mary Todd's response supplies the punch line to a ballroom encounter.

The stories mix public business with ordinary irritations. A recollection by law partner W. H. Herndon shows Lincoln explaining why he rehearsed legal history before a court, while a family episode follows Tad's demand for a promised dollar. Wartime jokes sit beside domestic scenes and courtroom exchanges. For readers interested in Lincoln's popular image, these short pieces show how a compiler used reported conversations and comic incidents to portray his manner and personality.
