About this book
Bawbie tells these comic stories with the patience and sharp tongue of a wife who knows her husband's odd habits well. Sandy Bowden can turn an ordinary errand into a spectacle, as the opening horse deal shows. He trades Donal' for Princie, loudly praises his bargain and tries to manage the restless animal while Bawbie and the neighbours offer their own opinions. The shop, cart and potato rounds provide a familiar setting for his impractical ideas.
James Bell Salmond's sketches were first written for newspapers, and their dialect and lively conversations give the collection its distinctive voice. Later, a local cricket club invites Sandy to act as umpire after he gives them an empty orange box for their equipment. Bawbie takes Nathan along to help her understand the game. Readers interested in humour from Scotland will find domestic banter, local gossip and comic misunderstandings in these stories.
