About this book
A bright red copper company poster opens an unexpected prospect for Abbie Todd, the postmistress of Taylorsville. After losing her teaching position, she has found work through the help of mill owner Hiram Taylor, yet money remains a constant worry. Her mother shares her small household and her disappointments. When a summer visitor from Boston describes profits from copper shares, Abbie begins to imagine an escape from years of limited means.
The prospect of an investment gives this short story its tension: a better life seems possible, yet the money carries obligations. A generous check from Taylor gives Abbie the chance to invest, but holding the share certificate brings anxiety about repayment. Village gossip, brisk dialogue and details of the post office give the financial theme a personal scale.
